For those of you unfamiliar with soil regeneration watch this!

otherwise read on!

The animals we invested in to regenerate the soil back in October 2018 did not start getting onto the land until late November and a flash flood hit in early December. The land has now started to show great signs of recovery through good animal management. Buying sheep from farmers in the drought stricken north of Australia as pictured in our first blog in Dec was the start to help create balance…

Here’s what happened!

The farmer had not had the time to place many of the animals on the land yet before 270mm of water hit in 2 hours (thats more than parts of western Australia get in a year to produce an entire crop of wheat!).

The water ran off in great swathes not helped by the land being more hydrophobic (repelling water) from suffering 50 years of poor land management by the farm predecessors. In the months that followed, they laboured hard to repair roads and fences so the remaining stock could arrive from the drought stricken areas of the far north.

The carbon levels and microbe diversity, so important to us all, will still be awhile. Biodiversity and wildlife must return. This is what many holistic farmers work to encourage and Urth works to help support financially with careful investment partnerships.

December 2018 a flash flood hit and several lambs drowned due to this freak, once in 2000 years, climate event… but will there be more? This is where collective efforts to regenerate soil and deep root plants using the animals to fertilise and nourish the land is vital

a week after the floods tore through the land these sorghum shoots sprung through - a good sign the land would recover with care

Each year crops like this oat crop are sown to improve nutrients in the soil - this one shown is from the year in July 2018 before the flood in Dec.

in thriving health on previous farms the farmer developed the soil to this - you can see the diversity of different grasses that provide different minerals for healthy animals and therefore rich soil.

and when the land is fully recovered they will see a crop of clover like they had back in August 2016 to fix nitrogen in the soil and so continue to regenerate with animals and plant diversity

To propagate microbes n the soil, small dense cow herds are carefully grazed and satellite monitoring is used to ensure their manure has generated life as densely as possible. This group of cows wait longingly for the single electric wire to be moved to keep the herd systematically fertilising the soil and not over grazing so the carbon stays in the ground. Depending on the feed and the rain this is carefully monitored. Ensuring the cattle are gently handled is just as important as every other element to create the best effect.

using different breeds of cow such as these Angus to fertilise the soil with different gut biomes/ bacteria, the farmer ensures the land is not over or under grazed and the cows gut returns rich nutrients to the soil to encourage plant diversity.

looking at the comparison of land management in the foreground and the back to let the grasses regenerate this shows 163 days rest from the animals on the land The farmers will do the same this year on their new land as they respond to the weather, health of the animals and the needs of the land.

Even a small sign that wildlife is returning as this little echidna pops his head up and the farmers take delight that the land is starting to rebalance. As always the best farms are the ones where both the husband and wife are an integral working team creating the necessary balance to the nurture of the land. - this farm is no exception proving them to be a great team.
